This is to inform with deep sorrow and profound grief that the Equestrian Legend Colonel Gulam Mohammad Khan, VSM expired on 01 May 2021 at Pune. This is actually a monumental loss for the sporting fraternity, as he was a leading light of Equestrian Sport. He was a member of the Gold medal winning ‘Three Day Event’ Team at the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi, and also won individual silver, riding ‘Goodwill’. At the next Asian Games, in Seoul in 1986, he was a member of the Dressage and the Eventing Teams, winning bronze medals in both teams and gaining the highest place for any Indian rider – he was 4th in the Eventing and 9th in the Dressage. Adjudged National Champion (Best Rider) in National Equestrian Championship in 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, he was a National Coach and also served as an International FEI Judge in Eventing, Show Jumping and Dressage. In 1984, he was bestowed with India’s prestigious Arjuna Award, for his outstanding performance in Equestrian Sports. His contribution to Equestrian Sports would be cherished forever. He would always be remembered as one of top sporting heroes the country has ever produced. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time and we pray for his soul to rest in peace.
